Drawn from Dust

All pieces in the Drawn from Dust series of mixed media drawings were derived from one single piece. This piece, titled Dust, became the inspiration and the original source material for all the resulting drawings. Dust is constructed of shredded aerospace documents, powdered graphite and jawbreaker candy–all compacted into a round disk resembling the solar system.

The jawbreaker candy, made of powdered sugar, makes a reference to star dust and our fragile human beginnings. This inevitably leads one to think of our ending. As it says in the biblical book of Ecclesiastes: “All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust.” Human beings, like candy, are fragile. We are here for a short while, and are destined to disintegrate and dissolve as we make our short rotational journeys.

The Drawn from Dust series is comprised of Drawn from Dust, Drawn from Dust – Cut, Drawn from Dust – Divided, Drawn from Dust – Magnified 3X and, finally, Drawn from Dust – Compressed. The pieces were all created by various techniques–including drawing, marking and rubbing–from the original Dust. Each is an examination and further investigation of the formal and conceptual origins of Dust.
